Electrical — Lighting
Lighting, Installed
and Wired Properly.
Recessed lighting, fixtures, ceiling fans, under-cabinet and exterior lighting — on circuits that can carry it, braced to hold it.

The Part of Electrical Work You Actually See
Lighting is the electrical work people notice. It is also the work most often done badly, because hanging a fixture looks simple enough that it tends to get done by whoever is nearest to a ladder.
The things that go wrong are predictable. Ceiling fans mounted to a box not rated to carry a moving load. Recessed cans cut into a ceiling without checking what is above them. A run of under-cabinet lighting added to a kitchen circuit that was already at capacity. Dimmers paired with LED fixtures they were never designed to drive, which is why half the retrofits in the Triad buzz.
None of that is difficult to get right. It just has to be considered before the hole is cut.

Lighting Problems Worth Fixing Properly
Most of these come from an installation shortcut rather than a faulty product.
Buzzing or flickering LEDs
Usually a dimmer that is not LED-compatible, or an LED load below the dimmer's minimum. Both are solvable with the right dimmer rather than by replacing every bulb again.
A ceiling fan that wobbles
Often the box rather than the fan. A standard ceiling box is not rated for a fan's moving load, and the fix is a fan-rated brace box fitted properly from above or below.
Recessed cans that cut out
Thermal protection shutting the fixture down because insulation is packed against a can not rated for contact with it. That is a fire-safety feature doing its job, and the fix is the right fixture.
Exterior lights that fail every season
Outdoor fixtures and connections need to be rated and sealed for it. Interior-grade parts in an exterior box will keep failing no matter how often the bulb is changed.

Lighting in Houses That Were Not Designed For It
Older Triad homes present a specific challenge: plaster ceilings, limited attic access, balloon framing, and in some cases no insulation where modern recessed fixtures assume there will be. Adding recessed lighting to a 1930s Buena Vista home is a genuinely different job from adding it to a 2005 build in Clemmons, and the right approach differs with it.
Newer homes have the opposite problem — plenty of access, but circuits already loaded close to capacity by a builder working to a budget. Adding a kitchen's worth of under-cabinet lighting to one of those often means a new circuit rather than a tap into the nearest box.

Lighting — Common Questions
Can you add recessed lighting to an existing ceiling?
Usually yes. How straightforward it is depends on what is above the ceiling — attic access, joist direction, insulation and any ductwork or plumbing in the way. We look before quoting rather than after.
Why do my LED lights buzz on a dimmer?
Almost always an incompatible dimmer. Older dimmers were built for incandescent loads and do not control LED drivers cleanly. An LED-rated dimmer matched to the fixtures fixes it.
Can you install a ceiling fan where a light currently is?
Yes, but the box has to be replaced with a fan-rated one. A standard lighting box is not built to carry a moving load, and fans fitted to one eventually work loose. That box swap is part of the job, not an extra.
Do you install fixtures I supply?
Yes. Have them on site before we arrive, and check they are rated for where they are going — damp-rated for bathrooms, wet-rated for exteriors. We will flag it if something is not suitable.
Can you light a yard or driveway?
Yes. Landscape and exterior lighting, including the circuits and transformers to feed it, with the correct burial depth and wet-rated connections so it survives more than a season.
