A Cleared Drain and an Honest Answer About Why

Most drain calls are simple. Hair and soap in a tub, grease in a kitchen line, something a child posted into a toilet. We clear it, test it, and you get on with your day.

What matters more is the drain that clogs again six weeks later. A recurring blockage is almost never about the fixture you keep plunging — it is about something further down: a belly in the line, root intrusion, or a main that is partially collapsed. Clearing the same sink four times costs more than diagnosing it once.

That is why we run a camera when the history warrants it. You see what we see, and we quote from evidence rather than guesswork. If the honest answer is that a cable job buys you another two years and that is the right call for your budget, we will say so.

When a Drain Needs More Than a Plunger

Some clogs are a fixture problem. These are signs the problem is in the line.

It comes back

The same drain slows again within weeks of being cleared. The clog is reforming on something that did not get removed — a root, a rough joint, or a sag holding water.

More than one fixture

The tub gurgles when the toilet flushes, or the laundry backs up into a shower. Two fixtures misbehaving together points at the shared line, not either fixture.

Sewage smell indoors

A persistent sewer odour means gas is escaping where it should not — a dry trap, a failed seal, or a break in the line. Worth looking at properly rather than masking.

Backing up into the lowest drain

Waste appearing in a basement floor drain or the lowest shower is the classic main-line signature. Stop running water and call before it becomes a cleanup job.

Older Triad Homes and the Lines Underneath Them

Neighborhoods around downtown Lexington, Winston-Salem's west side and the older parts of Mocksville were plumbed with cast iron and, in places, clay. Both corrode and crack with age, and both are magnets for tree roots looking for water. Mature hardwoods are part of what makes these streets attractive and part of why their sewer lines fail.

Newer construction in Advance, Clemmons and Kinderton has different problems — PVC does not rust, but it does sag if it was bedded poorly, and a belly in a line collects exactly what you would expect. Either way, a camera tells you which conversation you are having.

Drain Cleaning — Common Questions

How quickly can you clear a drain?

A single blocked fixture is usually a same-day or next-day job. A main line backing up into the house is treated as an emergency — stop using water and call us, because every flush makes the cleanup worse.

Do you use chemicals?

No. Store-bought drain chemicals rarely clear a real clog, they damage older pipe, and they make the job hazardous for whoever opens the line afterwards. We cable, jet or camera it instead.

What does a drain camera inspection cost?

It depends on access and the length of the run, and we will quote it before we do it. We recommend one when a drain has clogged repeatedly, when more than one fixture is affected, or before you buy a house with mature trees over the sewer line.

My drain keeps clogging in the same spot. What does that mean?

Almost always that something in the line is catching debris — roots at a joint, a sag holding standing water, scale inside old cast iron, or a partial collapse. Cabling clears the symptom; a camera finds the cause so you can decide what to do about it.

Can you handle the main sewer line, not just inside the house?

Yes. We cable and jet main lines, locate blockages, and handle sewer line repair and replacement when the line itself has failed.
