Heat Pump Specialists
Year-Round Comfort From a Single System
Heat pumps are the most efficient way to heat and cool a home in the North Carolina climate — but they're also more complex than a standard AC or furnace. They operate in both heating and cooling modes, run a defrost cycle in winter, and rely on a reversing valve that has no equivalent in other HVAC systems.
K&W technicians are experienced with the full range of heat pump technology, from traditional split systems to ductless mini-splits and dual-fuel hybrid configurations. When your heat pump isn't performing as it should, we diagnose the root cause — not just the symptom.
Whether you need emergency repair, seasonal maintenance, or a new system installed, we bring the same repair-first philosophy that's earned us over 130 five-star reviews across the Triad.

Heat Pump — Common Questions
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?
Heat pumps blow air that's cooler than body temperature even when working correctly — typically around 90–100°F, compared to a gas furnace's 120–130°F. That said, if your home isn't reaching the set temperature, you may have a refrigerant issue, a failed reversing valve, a defrost problem, or auxiliary heat that's not engaging. We can diagnose the exact cause.
My heat pump is running constantly in cold weather. Is that normal?
In temperatures below 35–40°F, heat pumps run longer cycles because they're working harder to extract heat from cold outdoor air. This is normal. However, if it's running constantly and still not reaching your set temperature, there may be a performance issue worth diagnosing.
What is the defrost cycle and is it supposed to steam?
Yes. When a heat pump defrosts its outdoor coil, it temporarily reverses to push hot refrigerant through the outdoor coil to melt ice. This causes steam — it's normal and typically lasts 5–15 minutes. If your unit is icing over frequently or the defrost cycle isn't completing, that's a problem we should look at.
Should I get a heat pump or a gas furnace?
In the North Carolina climate, heat pumps are highly efficient for most of the heating season. For homes in colder zones or with existing gas lines, a dual-fuel system (heat pump + gas backup) often gives the best of both worlds. We'll assess your home, your utility rates, and your comfort goals to make an honest recommendation.
What's the difference between a traditional heat pump and a mini-split?
A traditional heat pump connects to your existing ductwork. A mini-split (ductless) system delivers conditioned air directly to individual rooms through wall-mounted air handlers — ideal for additions, sunrooms, garages, or homes without existing ductwork. We install and service both.
How often does a heat pump need maintenance?
Heat pumps should be serviced twice a year — once in spring for cooling mode and once in fall for heating mode. Since they run year-round, they accumulate wear faster than systems that only run seasonally. Regular maintenance extends life, keeps efficiency high, and catches problems before they cause failures.
