Electrical — Repairs & Troubleshooting

Electrical Faults,
Found and Fixed.

Tripping breakers, dead outlets, flickering lights, half a room without power. The diagnosis is the job — the repair is usually the easy part.

Electrical Services

Finding the Fault Is the Skill

Electrical troubleshooting is detective work. A dead outlet is rarely a dead outlet — it is a loose connection in a box three rooms away, a tripped GFCI nobody knew was upstream, or a backstabbed wire that finally let go behind a receptacle installed in 1988.

That is why we charge for the diagnosis and not for guessing. Replacing parts until the symptom goes away is expensive for you and tells nobody anything about why it happened.

Some electrical symptoms are a nuisance and some are a warning. A breaker tripping under load is the system working. A warm faceplate, a burning smell or a breaker that trips with nothing running is not, and those we want to see today.

What Different Symptoms Usually Mean

Not every electrical fault is urgent. These two columns are not the same.

Burning smell or scorch marks

Stop using the circuit, switch it off at the panel, and call. A smell of hot plastic around an outlet, switch or panel means something is arcing or overheating right now.

Warm outlets or faceplates

Receptacles should be cool. Warmth means resistance where there should be none — usually a loose connection, which is how arcing starts.

Flickering across the house

One flickering fixture is usually a bulb or a switch. Flickering that affects several rooms at once points at the panel, the service connection or a loose neutral, which is worth attention.

Breakers tripping with nothing on

A breaker that trips under no load is reporting a fault — a short, a ground fault, or a failing breaker — rather than complaining about demand.

Older Wiring in Older Houses

A lot of the Triad's most desirable housing stock predates modern wiring practice. Homes from the 1920s through the 1950s in Winston-Salem and around downtown Lexington may have cloth-sheathed wiring, ungrounded two-prong circuits, or additions wired by whoever was available at the time.

Some of that is fine and some of it is not, and the difference is not something a homeowner can judge from a faceplate. If you are buying an older home, or you have inherited one with circuits nobody can account for, an inspection is a cheap way to find out which you have before something makes the decision for you.

Electrical Repairs — Common Questions

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Usually one of three things: more load on the circuit than it is rated for, a ground fault or short somewhere on it, or a breaker that has weakened with age. The fix differs completely between those, which is why diagnosis comes before parts.

Half my outlets stopped working. What happened?

Most often an upstream GFCI has tripped and everything downstream of it went with it — including outlets in other rooms. Sometimes it is a failed connection in one box taking out everything after it. Both are findable.

Is a burning smell an emergency?

Yes. Switch off the circuit at the panel and call us. A smell of hot plastic means something is arcing or overheating, and that is the stage before a fire rather than after it.

Do you charge to diagnose?

Yes, and the diagnostic fee is waived when you go ahead with the repair. Finding the fault is the work; swapping parts hoping one of them was the problem is not something we would bill you for.

Can you work on knob-and-tube or aluminium wiring?

We assess both and tell you honestly what you are dealing with. Aluminium branch wiring can be remediated with the correct connectors. Knob-and-tube is generally end-of-life and we will say so rather than patching it.
