Plumbing — Leak Detection
Water Where It
Shouldn't Be.
An active leak compounds by the hour. We find it, we stop it, and we repair the cause rather than the symptom.
Plumbing Services
Finding It Is Most of the Job
A visible leak under a sink is a straightforward repair. The expensive ones are the leaks you cannot see — inside a wall, under a slab, beneath a crawlspace — where the first evidence is a water bill that jumped, a warm spot on the floor, or a stain that appears on a ceiling a long way from where the pipe actually failed.
Water travels. The damage shows up at the lowest point it can reach, which is rarely where the leak is. Opening drywall on a guess is how a cheap repair becomes an expensive one, so we locate before we cut.
We treat an active leak as an emergency, because it is one. Damage from water compounds every hour it runs, and the difference between calling at nine in the morning and calling at five in the afternoon is often the difference between a repair and a remediation.

How Hidden Leaks Announce Themselves
Rarely with a puddle. Usually with one of these.
A water bill that jumped
No change in habits and a noticeably higher bill is the single most reliable sign of a leak running somewhere you cannot see. Check the meter with everything off.
Warm spots or running water sounds
A warm patch on a floor suggests a hot-water slab leak. Water audible when every fixture is off means something is flowing that should not be.
Stains, bubbling paint, musty smell
Discolouration on a ceiling or wall, paint lifting, or a persistent damp smell in one room. The leak is usually above and to one side of where the stain appears.
Low pressure for no reason
Pressure that falls off gradually across the whole house can mean a supply line is losing water before it reaches you — often underground, between the meter and the house.

Copper, Cast Iron and Cold Snaps
Pre-war and mid-century homes on Winston-Salem's west side were plumbed with galvanized steel and early copper, both of which eventually develop pinholes. A pinhole is a symptom of the pipe's condition rather than bad luck, so one is usually followed by others on the same run.
The other Triad pattern is freeze damage. We do not get a long hard winter here, which means pipes in crawlspaces, exterior walls and unheated garages often are not protected the way they would be further north. A single night in the teens finds every one of them. Insulating a vulnerable run costs a fraction of repairing a burst one.

Leak Detection — Common Questions
How do you find a leak without tearing up the house?
By narrowing it down before opening anything — isolating sections of the system, checking the meter, and using the symptoms to work out where water is actually travelling from. The goal is to cut in one place rather than three.
Is a slab leak repairable, or does the slab have to come up?
Depends where it is and how the house is plumbed. Sometimes a line can be rerouted around the slab entirely, which costs less and avoids breaking concrete. Sometimes it cannot. We will lay out the options with numbers rather than picking for you.
My water bill doubled but I can't see anything. What now?
Turn off every fixture and watch the water meter. If it is still moving, you have a leak running somewhere — and that is worth a call. A silent leak can run for months and cost more in water than the repair would.
Should I shut the water off before you arrive?
For an active leak, yes. Find the main shut-off and close it, and if the leak is on the hot side shut off the water heater too. If you do not know where the shut-off is, that is worth learning before you need it.
Do you repair the damage as well?
We repair the plumbing and stop the water. Drywall, flooring and remediation are separate trades, and for anything beyond a small patch you want a restoration company — we will tell you honestly when that is the case.
